Jan 12: Indo-Pak border skirmish The beheading of two Indian soldiers on the border by Pakistan triggers a series of skirmishes on the Line of Control. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh calls the incident unacceptable even as the Army chief General Bikram Singh adds that India reserves the right to retaliate.
Jan 27: Kumbh Mela begins The Maha Kumbh Mela begins in Allahabad after a gap of 12 years. During the 55-day mela, lakhs of devotees and sadhus take a holy dip in the Ganga. Feb 9: Afzal Guru hanged After dithering for years, Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru is hanged and buried at the Tihar Jail in New Delhi. The execution took place six years after the Supreme Court reconfirmed the death sentence for his involvement in the December 2001 attack on Parliament House.
Feb 21: Terror attack in Hyderabad Sixteen people were killed in the twin blasts in Dilsukhnagar area of Hyderabad. The two powerful, near simultaneous blasts, ripped through a crowded area close to a cluster of bus stands in Dilsukhnagar. (IE Photo)
May 25: Maoist kill Cong top brass In one of the most daring attacks in the history of Maoist insurgency, the rebels abducted and killed PCC president Nand Kumar Patel and his son Dinesh Patel, besides killing several top Congress leaders, as they assaulted the party's Parivartan Yatra at Darbha Ghaati. Former union minister V C Shukla also succumbed to injuries sustained during the attack a few weeks later.
June 16-17: Uttarakhand cloudburst Thousands of people, including pilgrims to Kedarnath and other holy sites, lost their lives in the cloud burst that hit Uttarakhand. Aug 28: The Indian rupee collapses to a lifetime low of 68.85 against the US dollar, registering its biggest single-day loss of 256 paise, as global oil prices jumped, deepening concerns about the current account deficit and capital outflows. Muzzaffarnagar Riots The riots in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar in September this year were one of the worst communal violence witnessed by the state in recent history. The communal clashes that broke out in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining areas of western UP on September 7 had left more than 60 persons dead and displaced over 40,000. The Akhilesh Yadav-led Uttar Pradesh government has been accused of not working to rehabilitate the riot-hit victims in the refugee camps. Sept 27: Rahul tears ordinance In a major embarrassment for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his cabinet colleagues, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi chose to publicly castigate the UPA government for issuing an ordinance to negate the Supreme Court order on disqualifying convicted MPs and MLAs, terming it as "complete nonsense" that should be "torn and thrown out".
Sept 30: Lalu convicted in fodder scam Former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav convicted and sent to five years rigorous imprisonment in a 17-year-old fodder scam case. The RJD chief, elected from Saran in Bihar, was immediately disqualified as Lok Sabha members under a recent Supreme Court order that an MP or MLA would stand disqualified immediately if convicted by a court for crimes with punishment of two years or more.
October 12: Cyclone Phailin hits Odisha Cyclone Phailin, a very severe cyclonic storm, said to be the second strongest after the disastrous super-cyclone of 1999, struck the Odisha coast, bringing in its wake torrential rains and wind speeds of over 200 kmph in the state and in the neighbouring north coastal Andhra Pradesh. November 5: Mars Mission launched India embarks on its maiden Mars odyssey with a polar rocket carrying Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) successfully lifting off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in its first-ever inter-planetary expedition. With the launch,India joins a select band of nations, with similar explorations of the red planet.
Nov 16: Sachin's last day on field Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar bids a tearful adieu to international cricket after serving the game for 24 years. December 8: Cong rout in Assembly elections The Assembly elections in Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh shocks the Congress with the party losing all the crucial states to BJP. The results also placed the saffron party in a comfortable position ahead the Lok Sabha elections next year. The only saving grace for the Congress came in Mizoram.
