‘Qateel killer’ almost deputy sarpanch now

Mutha village Sharad Mohol files nomination papers; 'certain' to be elected unopposed

Not a single resident of Mutha village in Mulshi tehsil wants to talk about the lone contestant for the deputy sarpanch polls. He filed his nomination on Wednesday and there are no others in the fray.

They, however, drop hints that the place to get the info is the Taleem, a village gymnasium where gangster Sharad Mohol (28) who had allegedly killed terror suspect Qateel Siddiqui in Yerawada jail spent a lot of time in his youth.

At the Taleem, Raju Mohol, is very excited. He describes the turn of events as "fortunate". Raju is Sharad Mohol's cousin.

Mohol, who has been in jail, has filed his nomination papers for the deputy sarpanch post. On Wednesday, Mohol reached Mulshi tehsil office after getting special permission from the court to file his nomination papers, revealed inspector Ganesh More of Paud police station. Three months ago, deputy Sarpanch Laxman Bharekar had resigned for 'unknown reasons.'

Wednesday was the last day of filing nominations.

Nayab Tehsildar Trupti Patil said, "Only Mohol's nomination has come. The last day for withdrawal of nomination is Saturday."

Another officer at the tehsil office said, "Mohol's nomination has been accepted, as he had not been convicted in any of the cases against him. He will be elected unopposed unless he withdraws the nomination."

At the Taleem, Raju Mohol says, "We all wanted him to be deputy sarpanch. We youths in the village and some elderly persons spoke to him when he had come for the hearing of the case in court. He was interested, so we supported his nomination. There have never been any elections as such in the village. We 'settle' things between ourselves and decide who will be sarpanch."
