A 12-year-old class-VII student, sexually abused allegedly by her uncle, gave birth to a child at Dabaspet Government Hospital, some 60 km from Bangalore, Monday morning. Her shocked parents, however, refused to lodge a police complaint.
The Nelamangala police said the girl from a village in Tumkur district was was sexually assaulted by her maternal uncle Naveen, a factory worker.
Her mother Leelavathi told police she came to know of the sexual assault by her brother at the hospital. "I was not aware my daughter was pregnant. Today (Monday) morning, she complained of stomach pain and I brought her to the hospital for treatment. She gave birth to a child. I am shocked."
Police, however, suspect Leelavathi was aware of the sexual assault but was hiding the truth. "We have asked the Kyathsandra police station in Tumkur district to follow up," Dabaspet police said.
Meanwhile, the minor mother and the newborn have shifted to the Tumkur district hospital for further treatment.
The Dabaspet police said she was born on August 8, 2001, as per school records. The Tumkur police said they would register a case and take action against the accused.
They claimed the girl's family took her to the Dabaspet hospital, not the hospital in Tumkur, for fear of being exposed. "The police will take further action," additional superintendent of police (Tumkur) R Lakshman said. The police said the victim's statement will be recorded once she is stable.
