13 BRTS shelters on heritage theme to come up in walled city

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has planned to build the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) shelters on the heritage theme. A total of 13 shelters or bus stops have been approved by the authorities concerned and work on eight has already started.
The upcoming BRTS shelters in the walled city will have extensive usage of wood and stone. This replaces the grey, cemented and tiled shelters in areas outside the walled city of Ahmedabad. Cemented and RCC roofs are replaced with wooden ceilings and exposed RCC walls are replaced with stone cladding. This will be with an addition of a stone carved chabutra (meant for birds to feed and rest) at both the ends of the stop to complete the heritage look.
Another new feature will be glazing view of Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited (AJL) symbol on the stone walls at both the entrance (BRTS is operated by AJL which is a subsidiary of AMC). There is also a long wooden seating arrangement on both sides facing each other inside the stop.
"The department decided to merge both development and heritage. Thus, in confirmation with the heritage evident in the walled city, we planned to reflect this through the BRTS terminus. Also, this way these would not fall out of place and surrounding architecture of the city," said AMC commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra.
Though name of these stops have not been decided, so far these are referred as numbers. While, eight stops fall in the route from Ellisbridge till Sarangpur with Danapith and Geeta Mandir as major stops, remaining three are along Prem Darwaza till Sarangpur route with Kalupur as the main station enroute. On an average, there is a stop proposed between every 500 metres of the stretch.
The design and concept has been undertaken by Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT) with minor modifications by the civic body. CEPT is also the technical consultant for the entire BRTS project.
