13-year-old girl found murdered in Malerkotla, rape attempt suspected

DAYS after a minor boy was burnt alive at Malerkotla in Sangrur district following an argument, leading to the town shutting down, a 13-year-old girl from Guara village was found murdered on Monday night. It is suspected that an attempt was made to rape her before she was murdered.

Initially, the police had registered an FIR under sections 376 and 302 (rape and murder). However, a board of doctors from the Malerkotla Civil Hospital have revealed that while the girl was not raped, an attempt was made to rape her before she was murdered. The village is located in Amargarh constituency of Malerkotla.

According to sources, while there are no visible injuries on the girl, villagers have claimed that the body was found in a semi-naked condition. "The girl's face was smashed with bricks and she was dragged in the fields," said a police officer.

The victim, a Class VIII student, had gone for her

tution on Monday. When she did not return till late evening, her parents both daily wagers started

looking for her. Late in the night, they found her body in the fields.

Sangrur SSP Mandeep Singh Sidhu said, "As per the medical report, she was

not raped. Though there may have been an attempt to rape the minor. We have lodged a case against unidentified persons and are investigating the matter."

On September 30, 12-year-old Vibhu Jain was beaten up and burnt alive at Malerkotla, leading to the a shutdown of the area. Malerkotla finally opened for business amid strong police presence after three days. The markets opened only when the police released four out of the five boys who had been detained and declared them as innocent. Later, the police announced a prize money of Rs 5 lakh for any information on the accused.
