2 Cong, 2 BJP councillors elected to F&CC

Two councillors each of the Congress and BJP as well as one nominated councillor were elected as members of the Finance and Contract Committee. The BSP councillor, who was one of the candidates, lost. It is after a gap of around 11 years that the elections of the F&CC were held.

Congress councillors Mukesh Bassi and Darshan Garg polled seven votes each. Among the BJP candidates, Davesh Moudgil received seven votes, while Arun Sood polled six. Nominated councillor Sat Paul Bansal got eight votes, of which one was transferred to Moudgil. BSP councillor Jannat Jahan polled two votes.

Over the past few years, the five members of the committee had been elected unanimously from amongst the councillors, with two seats each being given to the Congress and BJP-SAD alliance and one to a nominated councillor. The political parties were expecting the same to happen this year also. However, after BSP candidate Jannat Jahan filed her nomination, elections became necessary.

While the meeting of the general house where elections were to be held was scheduled for Tuesday, it was postponed by a day after Mayor Subhash Chawla complained of ill health. Questions were raised today by the Opposition on the reasons for postponing the House.

The system of preferential voting is followed in the F&CC elections. Experts from Panjab University who get the elections for the Senate conducted, were present. As the process started, the system being followed was explained to the councillors, first by the officials and then by Union Minister Pawan Bansal. Thereafter votes were cast.

After the counting was completed, it was found that Sat Paul Bansal had polled eight votes, while BJP councillor Davesh Moudgil, apart from the six first preference votes, also polled some second preference votes. Therefore, one spare vote of Bansal was transferred to Moudgil, taking his tally of total votes to seven.
