Two days after a 19-year-old woman was brutally assaulted by an electrician for resisting rape, her brother alleged that he has been getting threat calls to withdraw the case.
Anil, who was arrested on Monday night, had pushed an iron rod in the mouth of the woman to stop her from calling for help as he attempted to rape her. Doctors treating the Class XI student said her lips and trachea were cut.
Speaking to Newsline, her brother said Anil's brothers called him on Tuesday night and told him to withdraw the case. "They said they would kill me and make my entire family suffer if I do not withdraw the case. I received the call on my mobile phone and I have the call logs to prove it."
The brother claimed that six to seven people also went to the hospital looking for the woman.
"They said they are Anil's friends and that they want to see my sister. They threatened that we should not involve police and should withdraw the complaint.... I am the only male member in the family and I am scared. I have asked police to give us protection," he said.
He said their father died a few years ago.
Police have stationed a head constable and a constable outside the woman's residence in Jal Vihar. A senior police officer said: "Even though her brother did not give us a complaint in writing, we have stationed two policemen outside their house. We are looking for the person who made the threat calls. A case will be registered if required."
Police have also found previous cases against Anil.
"Anil was arrested in 2006 and was out on bail. He was involved in a case of causing hurt," police said.
Meanwhile, a tracheostomy procedure was performed on the woman on Tuesday and a tube was inserted in her windpipe to clear a pathway for breathing. "Her condition is now stable," a senior doctor at AIIMS said.
