20-yr-old held for stealing gold from uncle’s locker

A 20-year-old college student, who allegedly stole 1 kg gold from his Dubai-based uncle's cupboard to buy high-end gadgets and a car, was arrested by Amboli police on Sunday. Police said he had used 30 mobile phones, including iPhone and Blackberry, in six months.

Police said the accused, Nadeem Khokhar, lives with his mother Sabeeha (40) on the sixth floor of Caesar Tower in Jogeshwari. The flat belongs to Sabeeha's brother, Iqbal Khokhar (42). "Khokhar had left 1 kg gold ornaments in his locker but had not informed Sabeeha about it," said API Irfan Shaikh.

In January, when Iqbal returned and checked the locker, he had found the gold ornaments missing. Sabeeha, however, denied any involvement in the theft.

Police then acquired the CDR of Nadeem's mobile number and found that one SIM card had been used in 30 mobile phones. The officers found that Nadeem had frequently called a friend from the number. The friend told police that in the past six months, Nadeem had splurged on expensive mobiles and bought a car and a Pulsar.

"We found a local key maker and asked him to identify Nadeem's photo. He was unable to identify Nadeem so we took him to the building where Nadeem stayed. The key maker then identified the house and Nadeem," said Shaikh.

Police have recovered 250 gm of gold. "Nadeem sold the rest to his accomplice in Gujarat for Rs 15 lakh. We have arrested the accomplice Riyaz Baig and his friend Niranjan," said Shaikh.
