A 26-year-old lawyer was found dead outside his chamber in the Gautam Buddh Nagar court premises at Surajpur on Friday morning. Bhupinder Singh's body had injuries caused by a blunt object, as well as a gunshot wound in the thigh. Officers said they were waiting for an X-ray results and the post-mortem report to ascertain the cause of death.
A senior police officer said Singh had gone to Meerut on Thursday afternoon to attend a wedding. "He left his chamber unlocked. He returned to the chamber around 9 pm. His brothers tried calling him but he did not answer the calls. While there are no eyewitnesses at this point, we believe that he was attacked soon after he arrived on court premises," a senior officer said.
The officer said Singh's body was found just outside his chamber by a cleaning staff member around 8 am. "He was attacked while entering or leaving the chamber, or he tried to crawl out of the room after the attack. He might have bled to death from the gunshot wound, but that cannot be confirmed before the post-mortem report arrives. He was rushed to hospital but was declared dead on arrival," the officer said.
Around 10.30 am on Friday, the BAR association announced that they would boycott work until the culprits are caught. "This is supposed to be an institution with high security CCTV cameras installed. How can something like this happen here? We want the police to ensure our safety," Rajesh Yadav, a lawyer, said.
SSP Shalabh Mathur said, "We have clues on the incident and will crack the case soon. If any police personnel were found negligent, action will be taken. Security for the court complex will be stepped up in the coming days."
