9% city schoolchildren have dental traumatic injuries: Study

According to a study conducted by the Oral Health Sciences Centre of PGIMER, 9.07% school children in the Chandigarh from the age-group of 5-17 years, are suffering from various types of dental traumatic injuries, with most of the injuries having occurred at home, followed by at schools.
"The study was conducted to find out the prevalence of dental traumatic injuries to maxillary and mandibular primary and permanent anterior teeth of Chandigarh school children aged 5-17 years. A total of 11 schools of high medium and low socioeconomic strata of urban areas and two schools of rural areas of Chandigarh were included for evaluation," said Dr Ashima Goyal, pediatrics dentist, PGI.
She further said, "In phase 1 of the study, 11,538 subjects were screened for any kind of dental traumatic injuries. The children were then asked to visit the unit of pedonotics and preventive dentistry, PGI for a detailed clinical and radio-graphic evaluation as part of phase 2 of the study."
The results of the study shows that 1047 out of the total 11,538 children, had fractured upper or lower deciduous or permanent anterior teeth, giving a prevalence rate of 9.07%. Further, crown fractures were the most common traumatic injury in the permanent and deciduous dentition.
Boys (10.18%) showed more traumatic injuries than girls (7.85%). It was also observed in the study that prevalence of injuries increased with increasing age, with maximum traumatic injuries in 13-17 year old children.
Dr Goyal says, "The children with protruding teeth have a great potential for getting traumatic injuries, particularly during falls and fights, and it is also evident in the present study."
According to the study, most number of injuries (73.99%) were found in the children with overjet above 2mm, compared to the children with normal overjet. Further, the most common teeth affected due to dental traumatic injuries were maxillary (upper jaw bone) central incisors (73.9%) followed by maxillary lateral incisors (8.9%) and mandibular (lower jaw bone) central incisors (4.4%).
