A New Beginning

Once he was the object of stares and ridicule, but thanks to weight reduction surgery, Muzaffar Khan, a resident of Buldhana can lead a normal life. Weighing a staggering 265 kilograms when he went in for the surgery in April last year, Khan now weighs just 155 kilograms.

"My life has changed completely," grins Khan. "Before surgery, I could not walk for more than five minutes. Now I can cover distances of up to 5 kilometres Earlier, people on the street, especially kids would stare and make very rude comments. Now they gladly accompany me on my daily walks. I can ever climb stairs much faster than my younger brother, who is very thin People who see me in my present state cannot believe their eyes." The 23-year-old is full of confidence and wishes to resume his education. "I had had to leave school as it had become an ordeal. But now, I wish to complete my Bsc."

Bariatric surgeon Dr Shrihari Dhore Patil, who conducted Khan's Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy at Jehangir Hospital, attributes such a massive weight gain to a combination of hereditary factors, eating calorie rich oily and fried food and sedentary lifestyle. He also says, "Khan will continue to lose another 50 kgs over the next one year and finally stabilize around 100kgs."

Khan says his dream is to pursue a career in IT, thereby contributing towards the family income. And yes, he would eventually like to get married, he shyly adds. "But the best part is that sleeping normally, which was not possible earlier, is now a reality," he concludes.
