Aadhaar for students: University of Pune yet to appoint nodal officers

Despite a UGC directive, the University of Pune and most of its affiliated colleges have not yet appointed nodal officers to help students enrol for Aadhaar cards. UGC Secretary Akhilesh Gupta had in a letter dated January 11 had written to the Vice-Chancellor stating that student enrollment for Aadhaar was "high priority".

The move will help in linking the unique identification number on Aadhaar card with students' account number thereby making the disbursal of various scholarships and fellowships through direct cash transfer effective.

The varsity's admission section had recently come out with a list of 164 students, who were asked to contact Fergusson Road branch of a nationalised bank for Aadhaar cards.

"It is compulsory for these students to submit their Aadhaar cards for scholarships. We have not yet appointed any nodal officer, but are coordinating with concerned government authorities engaged in Aadhaar work to speed up the work," a senior official of the admission section told Newsline.

Apparently, the UGC directive on Aadhaar cards, mandatory for students of affiliated colleges too, was posted on the varsity website after much delay. The UGC had advised each of these colleges to appoint nodal officers to help students.

However several city colleges said they have not appointed nodal officers.

"We are planning to do so shortly. Students are facing different technical difficulties in getting enrolled for Aadhaar card and these can be addressed by appointing dedicated authority," said SP College principal Dilip Sheth.

Youth activist Nilesh Borate said educational institutions should take necessary measures to ensure students entitled to receive scholarships and fellowships, get UID numbers at the earliest.
