Abandoned baby laid to rest after ‘mother’ claims body

The body of the two year-old infant

The two-year-old infant, who died on Thursday night at the AIIMS Trauma Centre after battling for life nearly two months, was laid to rest on Friday evening. The woman, said to be her mother, cut a lonely figure at the Feroz Shah Kotla burial ground as she watched her youngest being buried.

With results of the DNA cross-match tests still awaited, doctors could not conduct a post-mortem examination without clearance from the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). Passing orders for inquest proceedings before a magistrate, the CWC directed that the child's last rites be performed as per the wishes of her mother.

After moving an application in the Saket court for custody of the child, the woman, escorted by the SDM and officials from the women's institution where she has been lodged for the last month, reached the hospital around 3 pm. She silently brushed away tears as she was hurried into the mortuary.

"When she came here last month to meet the infant, she was all smiles. She thanked the nurses and said God had given her a second chance, reuniting her with her three children. Today, she looked a different person," a doctor at the Trauma Centre said.

At 4.15 pm, the woman, visibly dazed, emerged from the mortuary walking behind a stretcher that carried the lifeless form of the child. She turned away from the television cameras and boarded a police van, clutching the child dearly.

"The child died of a massive cardiac arrest. We did not find any obvious abnormalities in her tissues, but it is likely that her brain injuries affected the functioning of the heart. We have preserved her tissue samples for more tests," said a doctor in the Department of Forensic Medicine. The Delhi government paid for the child's funeral.
