Abu Jundal: Has ID card from Pakistan govt, was initially mistaken for IISc attack suspect

Zabiuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal was carrying not only a Pakistani passport but also an identity card issued by the Pakistani government, with copies in English and Urdu. The identity card was issued in the name of Zabiuddin Ansari and the passport in that of Riyasat Ali, one of his many aliases.

Ansari was to use the Urdu version of the identity card in Pakistan and the second one outside that country. After he had been detained in Saudi Arabia last year, Pakistan had claimed Ansari is a Pakistani national and sought that he be sent back, officials said.

Both versions of the identity card have been seized along with the Pakistani passport.

During interrogation, Ansari has revealed details about men wanted in various terror cases. He said he had met Abu Hamza alias Mohd Ramadhan, accused in the 26/11 strikes and the 2005 attack on the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. In fact, Ansari was initially mistaken for Hamza, who was named during the questioning of LeT operative David Coleman Headley.

Ansari's interrogation report reads, "I met Abu Hamza in Islamabad when I had gone to meet Muzammil alias Yusuf alias Abu Hurairah after my escape [following the Aurangabad arms haul] in 2006... Hamza told me about his escape from Bangalore. He told me that after the attack, he dropped the weapon there itself and purchased some clothes and took a bus from HQ training Command Air force to Hyderabad. He travelled via Nagpur-Satna-Varanasi. From Varanasi, he went to Patna by train and then went to Kathmandu. He collected his passport which he had nailed under the hotel bed in Kathmandu and left for Pakistan."

Ansari said Muzammil alias Abu Hurairah, named after a "companion of Prophet Muhammad and narrator of the Hadith", was involved in the 26/11 attack and the 7/11 Mumbai train blasts, and responsible for smuggling the eventually seized arms to Aurangabad in 2006. Ansari complained to Muzammil that it was due to a slip-up buy Abdul Aziz alias Abu Rehan alias Wali that the Maharashtra ATS seized the consignment and the group had to flee. Rehan was the one responsible for sending weapons to Aurangabad.
