Armed with the MBA degree he had set out to attain, 22-year-old Hamidullah, son of an Afghan Army officer, was looking forward to the flight home to Kabul on Tuesday. So on Monday evening, when a fellow Afghan, studying with him at the same institute in Meerut, suggested a celebration-cum-farewell dinner, Hamidullah readily agreed. Minutes later, he lay dead on a road and his friend critically injured.
Police sources said it appeared to be an act of honour killing.
Hamidullah and his friend Naseer (19), students of IIMT, were shot, allegedly by the brothers of the two girls they were in love with. The brothers were assisted by a friend — the three, identified by police as Robin, Karan and Fahim, are at large. There is no word on the two girls.
Hamidullah had even got the name of his girlfriend tattooed on his neck, police sources said. She is a student at a mass communication institute and they had known each other for a year. Hamidullah's friend Naseer is critical and has been shifted to a hospital in Delhi.
Their friend Gausuddin, who was with them when they decided to go out for dinner, said Hamidullah received a call shortly after 7.30 pm. The caller asked him to meet him at the Ganganagar intersection.
"When we reached the intersection, we saw youths in a white Safari. As soon as they saw us, one came out of the car and placed a pistol on Hamid's temple. When I tried to stop him, he fired. Others also came out of the car and began firing," he said.
The assailants fled as Hamidullah and Naseer fell on the road. "I immediately called my friends and we took them to a local hospital," Gausuddin said.
Police said they were alerted around 8 pm. "We went to the hospital and questioned all their friends. A case has been registered and investigations are on," a police officer said.
