After five months, 14 surgeries, Sikar rape victim shifted to AIIMS

The 11-year-old girl who was gangraped in Sikar, Rajasthan, in August last year was shifted to Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences Friday.

She had undergone at least 14 reconstructive surgeries, five of them major, but there was little improvement in her condition. So her doctors at Sawai Man Singh Medical College in Jaipur referred her to AIIMS for better medical care. The Rajasthan government, officials said, would foot her medical bill.

The girl was driven to Delhi in an ambulance, accompanied by her sister and a team of doctors, SMS Medical College principal Dr Subhash Nepalia told The Indian Express.

The girl, who is from Darbhanga in Bihar, was abducted on her way back from an evening movie show with her sister, who is settled in Sikar, gangraped and then dropped off 20 km away, badly injured.

Her rapists, both in their 30s, are now in judicial custody while their four accomplices are out on bail.

At AIIMS, a senior doctor said the girl has been admitted to a ward in the department of pediatrics surgery. "She has undergone colostomy procedures multiple times due to a recurring infection. Even now, there is a severe infection in her genital region. We have conducted a preliminary analysis but a more detailed assessment will be done Saturday to decide future surgical or medical interventions," the doctor said. In colostomy, a pathway is made from the intestine to the skin to create an alternate route for excretion of fecal matter.

The doctor added that the girl was conscious and taking food and water. "Any surgical intervention in the immediate future seems unlikely since there are signs of severe infection between the vaginal and rectal region. Our first priority will be to control the infection," the doctor said.
