Manoj Tiwary is once again on a comeback trail after going under the knife — again — due to a freak knee-injury that kept him out of the Ranji season till now.
He was included in the Bengal squad as the 17th member, for their Ranji Trophy quarterfinal match against Railways, to be played at Eden Gardens from January 8-12. Tiwary's availability, however, is subject to a fitness test at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) on January 6.
The injury occurred after the IPL, when Tiwary went for a kickabout during the off season, ironically, to stay fit.
"I tried to play football with the intensity of a pro and badly damaged my knee," said Tiwary, speaking to The Indian Express.
That he still laughs at something that cost him half-a-season, speaks of his frame of mind. The 28-year-old middle-order batsman, intermittently in the Indian limited-overs squad, was prolific for Bengal during the 2012/2013 Ranji season with 397 runs in five matches at 56.71.
He's back to square one now.
"I've learnt to accept the reverses. Injuries have played hide-and-seek throughout my career. All I can do is to work harder and come back stronger," said Tiwary.
"I injured my shoulder on the eve of my Test debut in Bangladesh. I came back stronger after the operation and got myself into a good position, when a back injury ruled me out for the home ODI series against Pakistan and England last year. Then this knee injury, once again, had me on the sidelines," Tiwary said.
"I would have loved to return to First-Class cricket after a few matches at club level but our coach (Ashok Malhotra) told me that the team needed my service. This is a very important match and I will play if I'm even 60-70 percent fit.
