Afzal Guru hanged: Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah appeals for calm

In a hurriedly convened press conference in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has asked people ''to maintain clam'' saying it was Center's decision and the state government had nothing to do with it.

''We were informed yesterday evening about the hanging (of Afzal Guru),'' Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in a press conference at his Gupkar residence.

''The case was with the Centre and we (state government) had nothing to do with it,'' he said.

Chief Minister who returned from New Delhi on Saturday morning, asked people to maintain calm in the state.

''I appeal people to maintain peace,'' he said. ''I also appeal media to verify the facts before disseminating information about the events.''

Abdullah, however, didn't take any questions from the media.

Curfew was imposed in the entire Kashmir Valley today as authorities apprehended law and order problem in the wake of Afzal Guru's execution, even as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah arrived here to personally monitor the situation.

As a pre-emptive measure, all 10 districts of Kashmir was brought under curfew before day break, a senior police official said.

Large number of police and CRPF personnel have been deployed across the Valley to maintain law and order, the official said.

Attempts were made to break curfew in Sopore (the hometown of Afzal Guru) and Baramulla, police said, adding that security personnel fired in these two places.

Meanwhile, authorities have directed cable TV operators not to air news channels as it could lead to flare up in the situation.
