Against old foes, Man misses out on podium finish

Before the shoot-off, Delhi shooter Man Singh was doing a routine check of his rifle when Saif Bin Fattais of UAE came to meet him. Earlier this year, at the Asian Shotgun Championship in Kuala Lampur, Man had beaten Saif, who was the Asian record holder. The icing on the cake was when he equalled the Asian record for qualifying and the final rounds.

On Tuesday, as Man headed into the tie-breaker in the skeet event at the Second Asian shotgun championship at Patiala, he once again crossed paths with Saif. In a do-or-die situation, Man and Saif along with Almutiari Zaid took their positions and aimed at the bull's eye. But the day clearly did not belong to Man as he finished fourth in the event, hitting just one target in the shoot-off. Saif claimed silver while Abdullah Al Rashidi of Kuwait, the triple world champion, won gold.

"It's important for me to compete against the likes of Rashidi and Saif. Skeet shooting is all about precision and shooting in a competition like this makes one believe in their abilities. The last time when I won at Malayasia, everything went my way. However, this time I was bit unlucky and missed some shots in the qualification. But I am happy with my performance in the final. I shot a round of 24/25 in the final and it is a sign that I am shooting well," Singh, who shot a qualification round of 117 in the event, shared.

The Delhi-based shooter took to shooting in 2004 at his school in Ajmer and finished fourth in the junior nationals the same year. A member of the Indian team for Junior World Cup held in Germany in 2005, Singh made it to the Indian skeet team for the Doha Asian Games and continued to compete in the junior as well as senior circuits till 2010 when he finally graduated to a senior shooter.
