AgustaWestland deal: Middlemen Haschke, Michel fought over takings

AgustaWestland

A crucial piece of evidence in the Italian investigation report is an agreement that was allegedly drawn up by the two key middlemen in Dubai to settle a dispute that had threatened to end their contract with Finmeccanica.

The agreement, a copy of which was seized from a house in Switzerland and is cited in the report as a major piece of evidence, discussed how a total of 52 million euros would be divided between Guido Haschke and Christian Michel. The letter says that Michel has agreed to take a 12 million-euro cut in his commission to accommodate the demand of Haschke and "the family". It is, however, not specified in the letter what "the family" alludes to.

The Italian report says the agreement letter was one of many seized during a raid at Haschke's mother's house. The agreement was drawn up in May 2011 after the dispute threatened to end the contract with the helicopter company that refused to pay extra. Finmeccanica, according to Haschke, threatened to stop the payments that were coming through the bogus engineering contracts.

"During a meeting Orsi told him (Haschke) about his intention to terminate the engineering contracts before the time and, seeing Haschke's aversion, told him to find a solution with Michel, whom he met later for this reason in Dubai. They found a solution by reducing Michel's compensation," the probe report reads.

Following this scare, Haschke said that he met Michel in Dubai and was told by the UK-based consultant that an adjustment in the commission money was required. After the renewed agreement was signed in Dubai, Haschke said there were no further problems in payments of the commission.

"Michel was very calm unlike me and Gerosa and told us to be calm; 'You will see your situation will be sorted out'. Indeed, the prosecution of the contract went on without further problems," Haschke says in his confession.
