As a part of decentralisation efforts, the state government has bifurcated the Ahmedabad city taluka with a population of 60 lakh in two halves — Ahmedabad East taluka and Ahmedabad West taluka — with each having one deputy collector, two mamlatdars, two talatis and other staff.
Besides, 15 "jan seva centres", exact replicas of the Jan Seva Kendra currently functional at the Ahmedabad district collectorate office, have also been set up. Each of these centres will have two talatis, new personal computers with broadband connections and a printer, among others things. The computers at each centre would be connected to the main server at the collectorate to provide them access to all the data available on an area.
Nine of these centres are in Ahmedabad East taluka — Behrampura, Danilimda, Khokhra-Mahemdabad, Rakhial, Rajpur-Hirpur, Shaherkotada, Dariapur-Kazipur, Asarwa, Nikol-Naroda. Ahmedabad West taluka will have six centres at Acher, Vadaj, Mithakhali, Kochrab-Chadavad, Paldi and Vasna.
These centres, according to district collector Vijay Nehra, will offer all services for which people had to go to collectorate offices. These include issuing income certificates, solvency certificates, renewal of stamp vendor license, issuing residence certificates, OBC/creamy layer certificates, religious/linguistic minority certificates, domicile certificates and issues pertaining to ration cards etc.
Nehra said people could also inquire about their names in voter lists. "Now, people can go to their nearest centre and get the work done without facing much of inconvenience," Nehra told reporters.
