In less than one year, four doctors have left the hospital citing alleged factionalism or getting better opportunities
Already grappling with a shortage of doctors, the oldest hospital in the city — Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Secotr 16 (GMSH 16) — now has the additional trouble of having to deal witha 'brain drain' as senior doctors are increasingly opting to leave the hospital.
In less than one year, four doctors have left the hospital for various reasons ranging from alleged factionalism to getting better opportunities outside.
The latest to join the league is Dr Swami Das Mehta, head of the department of Dermatology.
Officials in the health departmentsaid that he had put in his papers three months back and will bid final goodbye on January 31.
While the reasons for his quitting the hospital after serving for over two decades on deputation are not known, insiders say that that he chose to put in his papers following lack of promotional avenues at par with other doctors in the hospital.
Interestingly, on an average, the OPD of the skin department is the highest with over 200-250 patients. Dr Mehta is also credited as the founder Head of the department of dermatology at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32 and was UT's first program officer for Leprosy and STD(Sexually Transmitted Diseases).
When contacted, officiating Director Health Services Dr Rajiv Vadhera, said: " We have already sent our requisition to the Centre for the required manpower to run the hospital, more so because we have expanded the healthcare services at the hospital as well with a New OPD block now functional. To make the working in the hospital more growth oriented for the doctors, we are running DNB courses so that our doctors can also gain the teaching experiences and can do thesis work, thus giving them equal opportunities for growth academically and research wise".
