Amarinder slams Badals for attending function during state mourning

State Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh on Sunday slammed Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his deputy, Sukhbir Badal, for attending a music and dance show at the opening ceremony of the World Cup Kabaddi in Bhatinda, even when there was a state mourning over the death of former Prime Minister Indra Kumar Gujral.

In a statement, Amarinder said: "It was an act of extreme impropriety and utter shamelessness when the chief minister had himself announced state mourning across Punjab, that he not only allowed the show of celebrations, festivities, dance and fireworks, but also presided over it. Was Badal mourning or celebrating the death of the former PM who happened to be the first Punjabi Prime Minister and a great friend of Punjab?"

Claiming that he will take up the matter with the Governor, Amarinder said: "Governments do not announce state mourning for the sake of formality. It is out of grief and respect for the departed leader. Badal and his son have actually shown no grief and respect for the departed leader and have rather celebrated it."

"Badal took a straight flight from the cremation of Gujaral to attend the celebrations, which is quite unfortunate and unbecoming of a chief minister," he added.

Meanwhile, the Dal Khalsa too, on Sunday, slammed the Badals for going ahead with the World Cup opening ceremony in the middle of the mourning period for Gujral.
