Although the city expressed grief over the death of Delhi gangrape victim and a few hotels cancelled New Year celebrations, gala parties were organised at 10 different places on Monday. They had all sought permission from Police Commissioner Ishwar Singh and were told to wind up their parties by 12 midnight or face action.

The Police Commissioner had strictly prohibited drink-driving, and the police, which has only five alchometers, had advised the New Year revellers to either bring chauffeur-driven cars or not consume liquor if they had to drive.

A number of eating joints and bakeries offered New Year discount as well. Kipps offered 10% off on bakery and cakes while Bake Fresh offered 13% discount on cookies.
