Amid tight security, PGI postgraduate exam today

PGIMER will hold the entrance re-examination for admissions to MD/MS courses for the January 2013 session on December 8. After facing considerable embarrassment following the cheating scam which was unearthed on the day of the exam, November 10, the authorities are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the upcoming exam is held smoothly.

The UT police has deployed police officials at all the 10 centres. Out of the 140 personnel deputed at the examination centres, 40 will be women officials, who will frisk the female candidates. PGI authorities had also asked the Punjab Armed Police to provide female police personnel. Consequently, the Punjab Police will deploy 30 women constables at the centres.

Though PGI has its own fleet of security guards, it does not have female security staff. The institute not sparing its own employees, has directed its staff, who have been assigned duty pertaining to the examination, to not carry their cell phones.

"Even PGI staff have been banned from carrying their mobile phones to the examination centres on Saturday," a PGI official said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ashish Kapoor said, "The UT police has deployed 140 police personnel other than traffic police personnel to assist the PGI staff in frisking and invigilation. At all the ten centres, eight police personnel will be deputed outside the centres to frisk the candidates, and six personnel will be inside the centres to assist in invigilation".

All the candidates will undergo body frisking, scanning through bug detectors, photography and biometric finger print capturing before entering the centres. Also, at all the centres, mobile jammers have been installed to ensure that telecom networks are jammed. As many as 7,285 candidates are eligible for the examination, however, on November 10 when the exam was cancelled, following the CBI busting a cheating racket and arresting seven girls who were dummy candidates, only 5,200 candidates had appeared.
