The family of Mir Amirul Islam, the 33-year-old who set himself on fire on December 3 alleging harassment by police after he stood up for a rape victim, has filed a complaint against Medi View Nursing Home on Broad Street, where Amirul was admitted on December 12.
"He was discharged from there on December 30. While the discharge certificate said 'the burn wound is better now', how did his condition deteriorate? He died within 24 hours," said Md Naushad Hussain, Amirul's lawyer friend.
Amirul's brother Anwar Izhar said, "We found out that three men had visited him a couple of days before he died. The on-duty nurse at the nursing home tried to stop them but they said they were his friends. They threatened to resort to violence if they were not let in. After that, my brother developed multiple organ failure and died," he said.
"We have put in a complaint at Karaya police station, requesting them to find out if the intruders were responsible for Amirul's death or if there was negligence on the part of the hospital authorities in terms of treatment or security lapse," said Naushad.
Debabrata Das, DC (SED), admitted they had received a complaint. "We are looking into it," he said.
'Greet Anisur with garland of shoes'
Kolkata: State Food and Supply Minister Jyotipriya Mullick, who had earlier asked his party cadres not to attend marriage parties in the houses of CPM leaders, kicked off a fresh controversy on Sunday when he instructed his party cadres to greet CPM MLA Anisur Rehman "with a garland of shoes". At a rally at Habra in North 24-Parganas, Mullick even asked his party cadres to beat up CPM cadres if situation demands. "Prayojone oder uttam madhyam din (beat them up if situation demands)." State CPM secretariat member Rabin Deb alleged that the Trinamool ministers are bringing in vulgar political culture.
