Veteran batsman Amol Muzumdar has made himself unavailable for the Andhra Pradesh cricket team for the remainder of the Ranji Trophy season. The midde-order batsman met Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) secretary Dr. Gokaraju Gangaraju on Monday and requested to be relieved.

With three games left in the season, the former Mumbai captain said it was the time for youngsters to get a chance.

"I will be mentoring them for rest of the season. We have three matches left and even if we win, we have no chance of qualifying. I thought its time to bring in the youngsters and groom them in these three games," Muzumdar told The Indian Express.

The 39-year-old said the decision to employ him next season lay with the association."I will be there until the end of the season. The rest will depend on the association," he said.

Big numbers

Muzumdar has the most Ranji Trophy caps he has played 136 matches having scored 9188 runs, second only to Mumbai's Wasim Jaffer (9504). Muzumdar also hit 28 hundreds, third in the all time list after Jaffer (34) and Ajay Sharma (31). He's tied with Jaffer for most Ranji fifties - both batsmen are on 73.

Muzumdar, who quit playing for Mumbai in 2009, played for Assam as an outstation player for a year before moving to Andhra in 2012. Muzumdar was the side's best batsman last season with 868 runs including five centuries. This year however he has only been able to score 97 runs in seven innings so far with a highest score of 29.
