The Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Services (AMTS) plans to add this year 200 new buses to its existing fleet of over 1,000 vehicles. This increase has been proposed in the Rs 412-crore AMTS budget for 2013-14 presented Tuesday.

The proposal includes 75 feeder buses and 125 buses on routes that will be scientifically planned by the Centre for Environment Planning and Technology (CEPT) University.

At present, AMTS has a fleet of 1,015 buses (552 self-owned, 288 on contract and 175 under Operations and Maintenance). As many as 778 of these buses are plying on 174 routes carrying seven lakh passengers daily.

"With the expansion of BRTS in phase III, 40 kms of corridor and 80 new stops will come up this year. Thus, there is a requirement to increase the number of feeder buses as well," said AMTS committee chairman Amit Shah while addressing a press conference.

CEPT University will be roped in for scientific rationalisation and re-structuring of routes for 125 new buses to be operational this year. It is expected to offer efficient feeder service to the existing and new BRTS routes.

There is also a proposal to scrap 75 existing diesel buses. "Around Rs 1 crore to be received from the scarp will be used to upgrade and install IT, telephone and Public Information System (PIS) across the city," he added.

The budget proposes to install PIS at Paldi, Vasna, Vadaj, Akhbarnagar and Sarangpur bus terminus and depots. Also, a software will be developed for computerisation of employees data, including salary, personal details, promotion, leaves and other information. A budget of Rs 90 lakh has been earmarked for this.

In order to provide accessibility to the newly developed areas in east and west zones of the city, two new bus depots will be developed at Vastral and Naranpura of an area of 20,000 and 19,276 square metres respectively. The project to be carried out under the Chief Minister Swarnim Yojana has a budget of Rs 10 crore.
