Mafatbhai Patel, husband of Anandiben Patel, the most powerful minister in Narendra Modi's ministry, is all set to join Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday.

The 77-year-old former college professor, who represented the BJP in the Ahmedabad Zilla Panchayat in various capacities between 1980 and 2000, now feels, "Aam Aadmi (common man) is the central point in all schemes of AAP, unlike BJP and Congress which focus on the rich and the corporates. That's why I have decided to join the new political outfit. I want to serve the people by strengthening AAP."

In an interview to The Indian Express, Patel, Anandiben's estranged husband, on Friday said that "Modi is surrounded by corrupt people and has ignored the common man. To clean up his image he should either quit their company or step down from chief ministership".

"Modi is doing a good job and I want him to progress in his political career. But the only drawback with him is that he is surrounded by corrupt people and he is also not paying attention to the problems of the common man. Modi has been fielding corrupt people in the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections," said Patel.

Asked if he meant that his wife (Anandiben) was also "corrupt", he said, "No, my wife is not corrupt. Modi is also not corrupt, but the coterie around his is certainly corrupt."

However, he refused to mention the names of those being corrupt around the CM, saying "everybody in Gujarat knows who are the corrupt politicians around Modi. No need to name them".

Patel said that he quit BJP in 2000, because he realised that there was a huge gap between what the party said and did at all levels.

However, he said he had no plans to contest elections. "I want the youth to come forward and contest elections. But I will certainly work for the AAP during elections."
