Anna Hazare mum on Arvind Kejriwal U-turn, says all hell will break loose

Anna Hazare was at a loss on Tuesday when quizzed about his flip-flop regarding his former aide Arvind Kejriwal and his newly launched Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Hazare first refused to answer questions about Kejriwal, then said it was "time" that had forced him to issue contradictory statements. He added that if he revealed the real reason behind his U-turns regarding his former aide then "all hell will break loose".

"Time is what made me change my statement. I cannot elaborate because if I do all hell will break loose," Hazare said. When asked about his former deputy's claims that he was certain Hazare would eventually back the AAP, Hazare said he was not answerable to Kejriwal's "dreams".

The social activist was addressing his first media conference after being discharged from Medanta Medicity, where he had been admitted after complaining of exhaustion and acidity. A day before getting admitted, Hazare had lambasted Kejriwal accusing him of being power hungry. At that time, Hazare alleged that Kejriwal was following the "money-through-power and power-through-money" route and added that he would have nothing to do with the AAP. The statement flummoxed his own supporters as well as Kejriwal's camp, coming as it did just five days after an unequivocal commitment that he would campaign for AAP and no other party.

On Tuesday, Hazare claimed that the Lokpal movement was "never political because I have never believed in politics. I have never told one person in my own village which party they should vote for. If I did I would have stood for elections much earlier...I am still studying the (report of the Rajya Sabha Select Committee on) Lokpal issue and if I am not satisfied with the recommendations that have been made, I will restart the agitation before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections". He added that he was not aware of the controversy over Walmart, but claimed if there was smoke, there was bound to be fire. He side-stepped questions about differences within his new core team.
