Anupama Sarkar death: PGI authorities yet to act on report

Even five days after the external inquiry committee, constituted to look into the lapses that led to the death of 17-year-old teenager Anupama, submitted its report, PGI authorities are yet to act upon the report and the recommendations.

Sources in the PGI say that the report was handed over to the director on December 24 in a sealed cover but the authorities are yet to act upon it.

Sources say that the report has indeed concluded that if the victim had been taken for a surgery in time, she could have been saved, and thus points to a serious lapse on the part of the PGIMER doctors who were on duty.

17-year-old Anupama was an accident victim who was brought to the PGIMER after her leg was crushed under the rear wheels of a CTU bus. Anupama was a student of Government Model School, Sector 18. She died on July 24.

Anupama had been taken to PGIMER on July 17 after her left leg was crushed under the rear wheels of a CTU bus while she was on her way back home from school.

When contacted, Manju Wadwalkar said, "The director is still examining the report and only after the report is thoroughly examined, can any action be taken on it".

Sources say that the external probe committee constituted over five months ago, has pointed out at the failure of PGI's system in handling this case. However, the report has not pinpointed any individual doctor or a staff member of the institute.

In the report, the committee has pointed out an overload of patients and impossible working conditions as one of the reasons for the delay in treatment.

Though the inquiry found that there was procedural delay, it has clearly absolved all the doctors and other staff stating that there was no intention of any doctor to harm anyone. It was the very system in which they were working that led to the unfortunate incident.
