At first Express IT awards, Karnataka says industry to get all help

Infosys Executive Chairman N R Narayana Murthy was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award while Managing Director and CEO of Tata Consultancy Services N Chandrashekharan received the Newsmaker of the Year award at the first Express IT Awards in Bangalore on Saturday.

"Such recognitions inspire me to work hard and smart for the rest of my life. It is a pleasure to receive the award along with one of the finest CEOs this country has produced," Murthy said after receiving the award.

In his message, Chandrashekharan said he was honoured.

Karnataka Home Minister K J George, who was the chief guest, assured the IT fraternity that the state government was committed to supporting IT and innovation in Bangalore and the rest of Karnataka.

Promising that the infrastructure in Bangalore would improve soon, George said Chief Minister K Siddaramaiah has allocated Rs 1,000 crore for asphalting of roads in the city. The government is waiting for the rains to subside to begin repair work, the minister said.

UIDAI Chairman Nandan Nilekani, who delivered a special address at the event, said platforms like the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) would result in creation of multi-billion dollar companies, like the Internet and GPS platform had done. Transactions based on Aadhar were currently in the region of Rs 1,300 crore, Nilekani added.

Awards were presented in nine different categories to 23 winners, shortlisted from 400 entries by PricewaterhouseCoopers and a five-member panel of eminent judges.

The judges included Nilekani, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw of Biocon, T V Mohandas Pai of Manipal Global Education, Rajan Anandan of Google India and Prof S Sadagopan of the IIIT-B.

Ashok Soota, Executive Chairman, Happiest Minds, Subroto Bagchi, Chairman, Mindtree Ltd, and Lalitesh Katragadda, Country Head (Products), Google India, were among those present at the event.
