Beed dental college students meet education secy, seek transfer

Students of Aditya Dental College Beed, on Saturday met state medical education secretary Iqbal Singh Chahal and demanded an immediate transfer to another college. Around 70 first year BDS students, most of whom are from Mumbai, have alleged that the college management was harassing them after they complained against the college. The students have threatened to stage a dharna at Azad Maidan.

In a letter to Medical Education Minister Vijay Kumar Gavit and the medical education secretary, the students have alleged that the college hardly has any faculty members, the infrastructure is poor and the college has failed to provide them even basic facilities. "In the absence of faculty members, we don't have regular lectures and the college authorities often ask us to do self-study. And even if there are lectures, the college administrator shuts off the lights and fans in the classroom. Practicals for anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and dental histology have not been held till date. There is no proper laboratory and other such facilities." said a student.

Another student said, "There were no demonstrations on human cadavers. Once we were shown a rotten and decomposed six-year-old cadaver that was without proper preservation. When we complained to the authorities, they scolded us instead. We had no option but to approach the NGO Forum for Fairness in Education. After we complained with the NGO, the college authorities started harassing us. They even threatened to expel us." These students along with activists from political parties protested outside the college on Thursday and 16 of them came back to Mumbai to meet the medical education minister, who was not available.

"The students and their parents have decided to organise a Dharna Andolan if the the medical education minister or the secretary fails to take any action against the college and its management. We will support the students," said Jayant Jain, President of Forum for Fairness in Education.
