Royal Indian Open WTA Challenger, the women's tennis tournament hosted 'Diwali nite' at the Solaris Club, Kothrud on Wednesday. The event was a get-together party to acquaint the foreign players with Indian culture. All the participants of Sanjay Kakade Group Royal Indian Open WTA Challenger tournament dressed in colourful sarees and had their palms decorated with mehendi . The 22 players also lit firecrackers in celebration of Diwali. They were accompanied by Indian players such as Prerana Bhambari and Rishika Sunkara. The closing ceremony was attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajeev Shukla.

Rhythm divine

Pune is getting ready for a "big bang" as India's only drum festival Dumru is set for its second edition. This time more than 50 Indian and international artistes like Vidwan Vikku Vinayakram (The Ghatam or The Pot), Guru Karaikudi Mani (Mridangam), Pandit Bickram Ghosh (Tabla), Talvin Singh (Drum and Bass), Ustad Fazal Qureshi, Sivamani, Greg Ellis (Drum) from the US, Pete Lockett from the UK and Bondo Fernandes from Goa, among others will perform at the festival. Also, 16 folk artistes who had performed at the Jodhpur RIFF, 10 tribal drummers from Goa and five body drummers from Kolkata will be bringing varied combinations of beats this year. As a part of a new outreach initiative, Dumru will be planting one tree for each ticket sold, and will also be offering scholarships in Indian classical rhythm, western rhythm and general rhythm training to five upcoming artistes for one year. The Dumru festival will take place from November 23-25 at the ILS Law College Ground.

Having performed globally at places like Russia, Latvia, Poland, Canada and USA, spiritual singer Renu Gidoomal will be in the city for a live performance on November 17. Gidoomal is performing as a part of the 133rd birthday celebrations of Sadhu Vaswani at the Poona Club from 7.30 pm to 8.30 pm. Having recorded ten albums till date she specialises in the genres of Bhajan, Mantra, Fusion and Mimicry. Her performance in the city will feature combination songs that include bhajans infused with Jazz music amongst other spiritual songs. Apart from having a wide repertoire of songs she sings in a wide array of languages.
