‘Biggest’ fake currency racket busted, 14 ‘Bangladeshis’ held

Counterfeit notes with face value of over Rs 26 lakh seized

The Gujarat Police has busted a major fake currency note racket and arrested 14 Bangladeshi nationals in this connection. The police seized fake currency notes with a face value of Rs 26.18 lakh.

They were arrested from Mangrol, Junagadh, Wankaner, Surendranagar and Bhuj.

DGP Chitranjan Singh said, "Jamnagar has emerged as the hub of fake currency note racket. (This is) the biggest such racket unearthed in the state so far. These Bangladeshis made Jamnagar their base and were found bringing fake currency notes from across the border via Malda district (in West Bengal). They used to circulate the note in Gujarat."

The police said two Bangladeshi nationals were caught in Jamnagar after they used fake notes of the denomination of Rs 500 at a petrol pump and a vegetable vendor's shop. They said the fake notes were supplied to them by one Salima alias Salma 'Aunty'.

Subsequently, the Surendranagar police traced the woman in Wankaner and seized fake currency notes with a face value of Rs 3 lakh from her house. The notes were of the denomination of Rs 1,000.

After going through the call records of her cellphone, the police found she was in touch with another suspect in Dwarka. On the same day, she was to receive more counterfeit notes from one Abdul Rehman, who was eventually caught with fake notes (of the denominations of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 ) with a face value of Rs 14 lakh.

On September 8, the Ranip branch of State Bank of India in Ahmedabad had raised an alarm that a man deposited counterfeit notes with a face value of Rs 10,000.

"We have asked intelligence and security agencies to assist us in finding out the motive behind bringing such a huge quantity of fake currency notes. Terrorist outfits in the past have used Bangladeshis to circulate counterfeit notes in the country and Gujarat has been one of their targets," the DGP said.
