The RSS on Saturday formally admitted that it had communicated its views on the prime ministership issue to the BJP, adding that a final call on the issue would be taken by the party.
Hectic talks have been on between top BJP leaders and the RSS top brass on the matter. "The Sangh has made its position clear. The Sangh has already informed the party, the party knows it. It is for the party to decide whom to declare and when to decide so," RSS spokesperson Manmohan Vaidya told reporters, refusing to elaborate further.
BJP sources said the RSS's choice was Narendra Modi, though the Sangh is not as yet putting pressure for an early announcement. However, as a BJP source said, "The RSS's opinion appears to be veering towards making an early announcement to end the uncertainty among cadres."
Vaidya's statement came ahead of a coordination meeting of the RSS's 13 affiliate organisations to be held on Sunday, where 25 top Sangh leaders and all BJP parliamentary board members will be present, including Modi.
Vaidya said the meeting would not discuss Modi's candidature but would see a "sharing of views" between the mass-based organisations for coordinated efforts in an election year.
Given L K Advani's known reluctance towards Modi's name being announced for PM before the coming Assembly elections, the RSS leadership is learnt to have asked veteran Madan Das Devi and former BJP president Nitin Gadkari to hold talks with him.
BJP parliamentary party leaders Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley refused to field questions Saturday about the message by the RSS top leaders to them. "We are here only on the issue of the Monsoon Session of Parliament," Swaraj said in response to a query on her meeting with RSS leaders, at a press conference she addressed with Jaitley at the party headquarters.
