BJP wins municipal polls

The BJP Tuesday registered a victory in civic body polls by winning 47 of the 76 nagarpalikas, while Congress only managed to win nine, according to state Election Commission officials.

The counting for Bhachau nagarpalika was suspended as the seals of some of the EVMs were found to be broken and the election commission said that counting there would be held later.

BJP state spokesperson I K Jadeja told reporters that the BJP had captured at least four nagarpalikas which were the traditional Congress strongholds. "The heavy tilt of urban voters in our favour shows their trust and confidence in the development politics of our party under Chief Minister Narendra Modi," Jadeja said.

"The Congress losing its traditional bastions like Jasdan, Dhoraji and Songadh was significant indicator of coming times," he added.

In Salaya, Kodinar and Chansma nagarpalikas, the BJP has won all the seats. However, the Congress too won three nagarpalikas from the BJP.

NCP won Boriyavi nagarplaika by taking 11 of 21 seats, where BJP won only on two seats and Independents taking eight seats.

The BJP won all the 27 seats in Salaya and Vallabh Vidyanagar nagarpalikas while it has captured 25 out of 27 seats in Thangadh. Boriavi was captured by NCP, while Anklav, Kheda, Chaklasi, Mahudha seats were won by Independents. Of the 1,884 seats for which counting took place, the BJP won 1,129 seats followed by the Congress which won 434 seats, while 290 seats were captured by Independent candidates.

Bahujan Samaj Party won on 13 seats, Samajwadi Party on two seats and NCP on 16 seats. In the mid-term poll for Talala nagarplika, BJP won on 13 and Congress won 8 seats.

'54 GPP candidates win polls'

Ahmedabad: Gujarat Parivartan Party (GPP) general secretary Gordhan Zadaphia Tuesday claimed that as many as 54 candidates fielded by his party won the nagarpalika elections. He said his party candidates had to contest the elections as Independents because of the state Election Commission's delay in allotting party symbols to GPP candidates. Had they been given party symbols, the performance of the party would have been much better. GPP had fielded a total of 284 candidates.
