BMC mulls award for best councillor

In an effort to extol the virtue of 'actions speak louder than words', the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is now mulling an award for the best municipal councillor.

Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte said the parameters for the award will be decided in consultation with a few institutions, such as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. "We are examining the possibility of giving out such an award. The idea was proposed at the group leaders' meeting today. Now, we will see if it can be instituted this year and what will be its criteria," said Kunte.

Earlier, the corporation handed out an award to the best orator among the municipal councillors based on their speeches at the civic body's general body meetings. "Leader of the House and group leaders decided on who would get the award. The last award was handed out four years ago," said ex-mayor Shubha Raul.

Mayor and Shiv Sena corporator Sunil Prabhu was the last recipient of the award.

The municipal commissioner said, "While a corporator may speak very well, there may be many others who do a lot of commendable work but don't necessarily speak well in the general body meetings. They must be recognised and we should encourage them for the good work they do. Assessment for an award should be more well-rounded."
