BMW crash: Car spins out of control on Yamuna Expressway, 4 teens injured

A Sunday morning ride in a BMW on the newly-opened Yamuna Expressway went wrong for four teenagers from Greater Kailash as a tyre burst spun the car out of control. The vehicle flipped several times and hit the guard railings of the road.

The accident took place near Rabpura village, 20 km from Greater Noida, around 5 am.

No complaint has been registered yet.

Police said Govind (18), Sonia (18), Poonia (18) and Nischint (19), who was at the wheel, are from Greater Kailash Enclave-I in South Delhi. They were taken to Kailash Hospital in Greater Noida, where Govind, Sonia and Nischint were discharged after first aid.

Poonia has been admitted to the ICU, with head injuries and broken ribs.

"They were brought to the emergency ward at 5.30 am. Poonia was taken to the ICU. She has multiple rib fractures and head injuries. Later, her parents took her to a hospital closer to their home," Kailash Hospital medical superintendent Dr S Kapoor said.

Police said the four were on the way to Agra, but the left rear tyre of the black BMW burst just a few kilometres from Greater Noida. "The car took some nasty hits as it spun out of control, but the airbags saved the teens' lives. The car's boot is heavily damaged," a police officer said.

Police said there was no evidence of overspeeding because the speed cameras didn't record any abnormality. The Yamuna Expressway has a limit of 100 kmph, but there have been allegations of people driving at much higher speeds.

A spokesman of Jaypee Group, the concessionaire of the expressway, said people were seen disobeying the rules.

"People tend to accelerate on this road, which is smooth and fast. They aren't supposed to do that. They do not realise the dangers of speeding. We have signboards to make people understand why it is necessary for them to follow the road rules," he said.
