Bratya: No govt control over college bodies

Education Minister Bratya Basu today said that the state government does not have any control over the election of college governing bodies and that educational qualifications are not judged while nominating the members of the governing body.

"Educational qualification should be taken into account. The education department is looking into the matter," he added.

The comments came soon after Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy condemned the recent attacks on college teachers.

Though Basu did not take names, it is clear that his comment was aimed against TMC's former MLA Arabul Islam, who had allegedly assaulted a teacher of Bhangar College a couple of months back. Prior to that, Trinamool leaders had allegedly assaulted the principal of Raiganj College.

Meanwhile, the Trinamool education cell today set up their teachers' organisation under the banner West Bengal College and Universities Professors Association.
