Three girls drown in pond

KOLKATA:Three girls drowned in a pond at Leningarh in Chandpur in North 24-Parganas on Thursday while taking bath. Ria Kar (9), Sneha Ray (10) and Priya Ghosh (9), who were friends and lived in the same locality, went to take bath around 2 pm. Since the place was deserted, no one came to know till 3.30 pm that the girls had drowned. A youth, who went to take a bath in the same pond, saw a body under the water and alerted the locals. The bodies were fished out and taken to Panihati State General Hospital where the girls were declared dead on arrival. All of them belonged to lower middle class families. Two of the girl's father are daily wage earners, while Ria's father is a van puller.

CBI exhumes 'Gurap inmate' body

Burdwan:An eight-member team of CBI officials on Thursday exhumed the remains of a person, believed to be an inmate of a welfare home for destitute women in Gurap in Hooghly district which had hit the headlines after the body of a mentally-challenged woman was found buried in its premises. CBI sources said the remains were exhumed from Telkupi ghat, an aadivasi cremation ground at Jamalpur, and comprised a skull, a number of bones, hair, a quilt, a green bedsheet and parts of a salwar kameez. Believing that these might have belonged to a woman, the sources said the articles have been sent for forensic tests. Biswanath Murmu, who had been earlier arrested for carrying bodies of women from the home to the cremation ground in his tractor, had confessed that the body exhumed during the day had been brought by him, sources said.

Two killed, 9 injured as van hits tree

Krishnagar:Two persons were killed and nine others injured in the wee hours of Thursday when a mini-truck, carrying people of a wedding party, hit a roadside tree at Chamta in Nadia district. Police said Kalipada Bashak (65) of Nabadwip Bedrapara died on the spot and Shila Das (35) of Nabadwip Sribash Anganchara died later in the hospital. The injured were taken to Shaktinagar hospital here. The driver of the vehicle was seriously injured and was referred to NRS Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
