Brought to Delhi from Jharkhand, two tribal teenage girls die within two days

Two 14-year-old tribal girls, who were brought to Delhi earlier this month by their neighbour with the promise that they would be employed as domestic helps, were found dead under mysterious circumstances within a gap of two days. One girl died in Delhi and the other at the Ranchi railway station while being sent home.

Chandumani, the woman who brought them to Delhi, has been detained for questioning. For now, police in both Delhi and Jharkhand are treating these as natural deaths since no external injuries were visible on the bodies.

On April 19, the Malviya Nagar police station in Delhi received a call from the Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital about a 14-year-old girl who had been brought to the hospital in serious condition. Police were told that a woman accompanying her said the girl was from Jharkhand. By the time policemen reached the hospital, the girl, later identified as Jyoti Mariyam Hora, was dead.

The second girl, Dayamani Guriya, who had been sent back to Jharkhand by Chandumani, collapsed at the Ranchi railway station and died on April 21. Chandumani's daughter Eden had travelled with her from Delhi.

Preliminary police inquiries have revealed that Chandumani, who lives with Eden and her brother Sukhram, had brought the girls to Delhi earlier this month. They were all staying in Chirag Dilli where Chandumani works as a domestic help.

Superintendent of Police (Khunti) M Tamilvanan said: "They left with Chandumani on April 11 without informing their parents. The woman was a frequent visitor to Delhi. They must have thought she would find them jobs."

So far, the police have not found any trafficking angle in the case. "We have registered a case of abduction against Chandumani, her daughter and brother. Trafficking requires proof that she handed over the girls to a third party," Tamilvanan said.
