Buddha for movement against chit funds

Former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Friday said there was a need for a strong movement against chit funds operating in West Bengal.

"There is a need for a strong movement against this," Bhattacharjee told reporters here on the eve of 47th foundation day of Left Front mouthpiece Ganashakti. Indirectly blaming the Trinamool government for not doing enough against the menace, he said: "We sensed the problem when we saw small saving decreasing and changed the law when we were in power, but it is still awaiting the Centre's nod."

Commenting about the recent brutal rape and murder in Delhi, Bhattacharjee said, "We should not think that there is no problem here. We have to be alert. We have to reach out to the young people. If we do not act these young people will not spare us." Bhattacharjee and CPM state secretary Biman Bose attacked the ruling Trinamool Congress for allegedly destroying democracy in the state. Both the leaders said that the Trinamool Congress was like the Congress and BJP, which, they alleged, spoke for the poor.
