Buildings in place of Kamalistan Studios: buyer from city
The iconic Kamalistan Studios that went under the hammer recently and was sold off to three bidders will now see high-rise apartments in its place. No part of the studios will be preserved despite its historic contribution to Bollywood, said Pune-based developer Avinash Bhosale who is one of the three parties to buy the property.
Bhosale said the deal was signed six months ago. For one-third share in the 15-acre property, he paid Rs 60 crore to one of the three heirs of filmmaker Kamaal Amrohi who started the studio. "I had been working towards this deal for a long time. Considering the size and location there were obviously many bidders for it but I think what worked in my favour was the fact that I know the family well," said Bhosale. The studio is located at Jogeshwari-Vikhroli link road which is a prime location.
He denied that the three buyers have got the land at a bargain price (Rs 200 crore collectively) and that there were differences amongst Amrohi's heirs due to this. "Why would they sell it for less? In Mumbai deals go far higher than this," said Bhosale.
Bhosale said while it has been decided that a residential complex will come up on the Jogeshwari property, they have yet to finalise other details about it. "We will have all the plans in place in four to six months. It has not been decided whether it will be a premium complex or otherwise," said Bhosale. He also confirmed that they have no plans to preserve any part of the studio that saw some of the most famous films being shot there.
Meanwhile, Waseem Amrohi, son of Rukhsar Amrohi, said, "Yes, the property has been sold to the said parties but I am not aware if they intend to pull the studio down. The issue with my uncle Shandar Amrohi is still in limbo. There was no possibility of an amicable solution, however, we did reach an understanding on certain issues."
The Kamalistan Studio property had been under dispute for sometime now with Kamal Amrohi's three heirs allegedly having differences amongst themselves. Sometime back it had also made news for Shandar Amrohi's declaration of pledging a part of his share to Preity Zinta whom he regarded as his daughter. While Bhosale bought his share from Rukshar Amrohi, DB Realty paid Tajdar Amrohi and Luthrias took their share from Shandar Amrohi.
