Case against Azamgarh college students for rioting, arson

The supporters of a candidate, who lost the contest for the post of president in the students' union elections of Shibli National Degree College (SNDC) in Azamgarh, set on fire a private vehicle and damaged two police vehicles Sunday night.

A case of rioting, arson and damaging public property has been registered against the candidate and his supporters. Some persons were detained under Section 151 of the Criminal Procedure Code last night.

However, no arrests have been made in connection with the FIR registered at Kotwali police station.

According to the police, the counting of votes of the students' union elections at SNDC, located in Bramsthan area under Kotwali police station, was in the last round when supporters of Prashant Kumar Singh, who seemed to be losing, turned violent around 7.30 pm. Prashant was defeated by Mohammad Amir Khan by 137 votes.

"Without any provocation, they began pelting stones at anything and everything that came their way. The official vehicles of the Superintendent of Police and the Circle Officer (Lalganj) were damaged in stone pelting. SP's driver also sustained minor injuries. Additional reinforcements were called in and the Azamgarh SP took charge of the situation. The matter was brought under control after the police lathicharged the unruly students," said Additional SP (City), Vinod Kumar.

On the basis of a complaint lodged by S-I Manoj Kumar Singh, the in-charge of Brahmsthan police post, a case pertaining to rioting, arson, obstructing public servant in discharge of duty, provoking breach of peace, along with Section 7 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act has been registered at Kotwali police station. Apart from Prashant, at least 16 of his supporters have been named in the FIR, besides around 150 unnamed students.

"Some persons were detained for breach of peace under the CrPC last night. However, no arrests have been made so far in connection with the FIR registered," said Kumar.
