CBI arrests two ex-officials for irregularities in 134 hospitals

The CBI on Thursday arrested P K Bhukesh, former director of Construction and Design Services (C&DS) of UP Jal Nigam, and a former coordinator of Nehru Yuva Kendra D K Singh in a case of financial irregularities in the maintenance of 134 hospitals under the NRHM scheme.

The arrest of Bhukesh and Singh was made at the Delhi CBI office following their questioning in the case, said CBI Chief Information Officer Dharini Mishra.

She confirmed that former minister Babu Singh Kushwaha is a co-accused in the same case.

The CBI had registered the case on January 2 and had conducted searches at Bhukesh's house on January 19 and at Singh's house the next day.

During the search at Singh's house, the agency found documents related to seven properties with estimated value of over Rs 8 crore, and five bank accounts in which a total of Rs 75 lakh was deposited.

The accused failed to provide details of the sources through which he had collected the wealth.

His arrest was made after finding his role in helping private firms in procuring contracts from C&DS using illegal means, said the CBI sources.

Bhukesh was arrested after evidence allegedly corroborated his involvement in awarding contracts to private firms against the norms, causing loss to the government exchequer, sources added.

The case is related to award of work of maintenance of 134 hospitals for an amount of Rs 13.4 crore to Ghaziabad-based firm Surgicon Medi Equip Pvt Ltd. The investigation found that the firm had procured the contract on the basis of bogus documents, using the alleged influence of the then family welfare minister Babu Singh Kushwaha.

On-the-spot checking by a CBI team and the experts revealed that the construction material and other goods supplied to the hospitals were of sub-standard quality.
