Centre’s indifference led to Delhi rape: TMC

The Mamata Banerjee government today condemned the gangrape of a 23-year-old woman in Delhi and blamed the "indifferent attitude" of the Congress-led government at the Centre for the incident and subsequent public outrage.

The Delhi government was indifferent to issues concerning security of women, Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee, considered close to Mamata, told reporters at Writers' Buildings today.

Mukherjee also criticised some ministers for their comments on life imprisonment for the accused. "Is there any provision of life imprisonment for such an offence in IPC?" Mukherjee asked.

He slammed critics of the Mamata government — which was under fire for allegedly failing to stop incidents of rape and molestation in Bengal — for being silent on the Delhi rape. "Rape is condemnable irrespective of where it happens. When a woman was raped in Park Street, many were seen criticising the state government on TV. The TV channels held programmes on that incident. Where have the critics of the state government gone now?" Mukherjee asked.
