The lawyers in Chitrakoot district who have been on strike for nearly a month demanding the arrest of Samajwadi Party MLA from Karwi Veer Singh for allegedly kidnapping a lawyer, have now approached the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh seeking their support to press for action against the MLA.
Suresh Tiwari, vice-president of Chitrakoot Bar Association, said a delegation of lawyers from Chitrakoot met the state Bar Council office bearers on Saturday and it was decided that a day-long symbolic strike will be observed by the lawyers in the state to press for the arrest of the SP MLA. He said the date of the strike has not been decided yet.
He said the delegation had also come to Lucknow to meet Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav but could not get an appointment.
The lawyers in Chitrakoot have been on strike since January 16, after Shivshankar Singh, a zila panchayat member and lawyer, had alleged that he was kidnapped by Veer Singh, his uncle and Mirzapur MP Bal Kumar Patel and his cousin and MLA Ram Singh.
Shivshankar had alleged that he was kidnapped by Veer Singh as he had refused to vote in favour of the MLA's wife Mamata Patel in the election of zila panchayat chairperson.
Tiwari said police were not making any progress in the investigation and none of the accused had been arrested.
An FIR was lodged at Karwi police station against Veer Singh and his associate Arjun Singh who is husband of a zila panchayat member. While Chitrakoot SP could not be reached, Suresh Chandra Rawat, Circle Officer(City), said police were investigating the case.
