City’s oldest school for special children clamours for funds

The School for Deaf and Dumb, Tagore Nagar, is home to 200 children, of which 87 reside permanently in its hostel. Established in 1971 by Late Ved Prakash Nepal, the then General Secretary and Suvarsha Kalra, a government teacher then, it is serving as the city's lone school for deaf and dumb children. The institute not only caters to these special children from Ludhiana but also Chhattisgarh, Jammu & Kashmir, Maharashtra, Haryana and Rajasthan.

Kalra, now the General Secretary of the Ludhiana Educational Society and director of the school is working selflessly for the school since 1971.

She said funds for the institute are arranged by donors. "There is no fixed share from any society or individual as school entirely runs sundry donations made by parents, city residents and other organisations."

She added, "In recent years, donations for our school have declined. People are now more inclined towards religious donations. They don't understand that God-gifted children need their help. Helping them is the true service to God."

"Some parents come and leave their children here and never come back, not even to visit them once in a year. Some give wrong contact details so that they are never bothered about their children ever again. These innocent children feel bad and wait for hours for their families to come and visit them. That is when we try to entertain them by taking them on outings. But we can never take their parent's place in their lives."

Highlighting the urgent need of educational as well as other funds for school, Kalra said, "Although they go out to play in some other college's ground nearby, we need a playground for them as students of the college tease them and do not let them play peacefully. We also need to appoint more trained teachers."
