Civic body to clear garbage from MMRDA, MHADA owned colonies

Task

At a time when the civic administration has been drawing flak for its poor garbage disposal, it will now take up the additional task of clearing garbage from colonies owned by public agencies such as MMRDA and MHADA.

At present, BMC is responsible for managing solid waste from all private layouts, public roads and public layouts excluding layouts falling under MMRDA and MHADA. Following complaints of poor garbage collection from areas such as Lallubhai Compound in Mankhurd and Sangharsh Nagar in Chandivali which do not fall under the BMC jurisdiction, the civic body plans to include other public layouts under its garbage collection plan, officials said.

Additional Municipal Commissioner, Mohan Adtani said, "According to the agreement between the various agencies and BMC, the civic administration will first serve these authorities a notice in case of failure to pick garbage. After which we will pick the garbage and charge a specific fee for the same". The project affected tenements (PAP) which are built by MMRDA will also be covered under the scheme, said Adtani.

BMC will engage various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to carry out the task, said officials. Meanwhile, members of the standing committee has criticised the civic administration's poor garbage collection drive which could be a possible reason for the increase in dengue cases in city.

"Garbage disposal at MHADA colonies in Antop Hill is poor due to which four cases of dengue were reported. One needs to ensure proper garbage disposal so that cases of such disease do not increase, said Shiv Sena corporator and Standing Committee member, Trushna Vishwasrao from Antop Hill.

Meanwhile, the civic body will also increase the frequency of cleaning and collecting garbage from the 5,000 gullies in the city. It will now collect garbage and ensure cleanliness in these gullies once every week instead of the earlier scheme of once in every three months, a civic official added.
